Editor’s Letter By The Art Partners

The idea for this issue was born very naturally. Music and photography resonate with, and more broadly speaking, support each other. Collaborations are needed now more than ever before.

With the major disruptions that we continue to face in 2020, each of us must make a choice – to choose creation over destruction, voice over silence, acknowledgment over ignorance. Or even just to use creativity to express the frustration and confusion. It feels like culture has more responsibility now than ever before. This issue is about artists, drifters, and precious moments captured by the camera. From an overview of the most iconic musicians and photographers of the 60s and 70s, we survey the key contemporary initiatives and ideas of the younger generation, hoping it will inspire the reader.

We wanted to bring the sound to an art fair. Add another sensation and dimension. So tune in and listen to the playlist created by I am Boleyn. Followed by our in depth conversation with her on creative synergies and the state of the music industry during the lockdown, captured over Zoom by the talented Eva Pentel. For the cover of the issue we selected an artist whose vision perfectly unifies two worlds, music and photography - Tyler Mitchell. His photoshoot of such music icons as Beyoncé (featured in American Vogue just at the age of 23) and Solange are simply striking. His monograph I Can Make You Feel Good, celebrating the artist’s distinctive vision of a Black utopia, is debuting in July 2020.

And art, as Gerard Richter said, is an ultimate form of hope.
